If you have a web site that is currently hosted on a provider without its own domain name (i.e. www.geocities.com/yourname/), you might want to consider using a redirect service like ShortURL so that you can have a short domain like yourname.shorturl.com.
You can also use a redirect service for advertising or expanding shelf space on some search engines. A good example of this was when we set up the Short URL isp.vze.com for a client who happened to be an ISP. Since some search engines give higher relevance to sites with the actual search term in the domain name, this redirect would be useful for the company if a potential client is search the term "ISP".
There are also free domain redirect services that you can utilize if you have registered your own domain name but are still hosting the web site at a free web host, either through your own ISP or through a free service like GeoCities or AngelFire. My favorite, an old but goodie, is .
While there is a prevalence of domain registrars out there that offer "free domain forwarding or redirects", don't be sucked in to purchase their services in order to utilize their "free service". There are still domain redirect services out there which are actually and truly free - you just need to find them. Here are a few:
