Meta Tags 101: Search Engine Basics
|
Search engines use your meta tags and site content to index and describe your web site. Meta tags are positioned in the html of each web page. Meta tags contain the title, description, keywords, robot instructions and more for your web site so that visiting search engines and search indexes can properly interpret your site's content and relevance to specific search terms. By optimizing your meta tags, you increase your site's chances of being displayed in the top search results for some search engines. Other search engines, like Google, rely on complex algorithms to determine site ranking based on the relevance of the site to the overall web.
Google's PageRank algorithm (named after Larry Page, one of Google's founders), relies on the democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. What this means is that the importance (page ranking) of your site depends on the number of sites that link to you. The more web sites that link to your page, the more relevant that page is, in the eyes of Google. Additionally, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of links a page receives, it also looks at the ranking of the page that is linking to you. Links from sites that are highly ranked within Google weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." [more]
