What is an ISP?
An ISP, or Internet Service Provider, is the
company that enables you to connect to the web through a modem,
DSL, cable, or wireless broadband. Some well-known ISPs are America
Online (AOL), Earthlink, and Cox Cable. Each charges a monthly
fee for their services.

Do I have to use my current ISP as
my web site host?
No. In fact, many people who use large ISPs
to connect to the Internet choose to put their web sites onto
the servers of smaller, local companies. Yalia
will be happy to recommend a company to host your web site.

What is a web browser?
In order to view web sites you need software
called a web browser. The most well known web browsers are Internet
Explorer and Netscape Communicator. Both are free, have PC and
Macintosh versions, and can be downloaded from the web sites
of the companies who make them: Internet Explorer can be downloaded
for free at http://www.microsoft.com and
Netscape Communicator can be downloaded for free at http://www.netscape.com.
Apple Computer has recently designed their
own web browser, only for Macintosh computers. It is called Safari
and is available to be downloaded for free at http://www.apple.com.
NOTE: If your ISP is America Online (AOL),
you already have their web browser built into the AOL software
so you don't have to download any of the web browsers mentioned
above.

How will people find my site?
There are primarily three ways that people
find a web site:
- a web site address (URL) is printed on
a business card, brochure, or advertisement
- someone tells them a web site's URL
- they search for the URL using a search
engine web site
Search engine sites (e.g., Google, Yahoo!)
maintain databases containing information and links to millions
of web sites on the Internet.
In order for these search engines to know your
new web site exists, your site must be submitted to them. (Some
search engines will eventually pick up your site but to be sure,
you want to announce your new presence on the web.) Yalia
Technology Design provides basic search engine submission services
only. The fee for this is included in your web site development
package. If you need more advanced search engine placement, Yalia
Technology Design will refer you to a company who specializes
in such services.
